Ulpan and Hebrew Learning Resources
Learning Hebrew is essential to an Oleh’s integration into Israeli society. It empowers and enables you to feel comfortable both in the workplace and in social settings.
Taking an Ulpan class and improving your Hebrew skills, both before and after making Aliyah, improves your marketability in the Israeli workplace and helps you integrate more successfully into Israeli society. Whether you have fairly good Hebrew or are just beginning the learning process, there are things you should start to do even if you are more than a year from your target Aliyah date. This listing offers you several options for studying Hebrew, either in an Ulpan or in another learning format – for adults and children – both before and after you arrive in Israel.
There are many resources available to assist you in gaining proficiency in Hebrew.
Public Ulpan
Once you have made Aliyah, Misrad H’Aliyah V’Haklita offers an in-person public ulpan. Classes are generally five hours a day, five days a week, for five months (a total of about 420 – 450 hours). Please see Misrad H’Aliyah V’Haklita’s Ulpan page for details and to apply online. Some municipalities offer Ulpan for their residents as well.
Private Ulpan
Private ulpan is either in person or on Zoom, is usually a total of 200 hours, up to six months long, and has up to 12 students in a class. After receiving Misrad H’Aliyah V’Haklita approval and voucher, you can register for the Ulpan of your choice (provided it’s included on the approved list). You must present your voucher at the time of registration. You should only pay the tuition after receiving confirmation of enrollment in writing. After submitting the required documents to Misrad H’Aliyah V’Haklita, you will be reimbursed in two installments. Please note that there is a deadline for reimbursement, so be sure to submit your documents in a timely manner. Please see full details on Misrad H’Aliyah V’Haklita’s website.
During the first two years after Aliyah: once one successfully completes a public Ulpan, one can request a voucher for an additional, private Ulpan program from Misrad Haklita, for which payment will be reimbursed.
For those who made Aliyah more than two years but less than ten years prior: there is no prerequisite for public ulpan to request a voucher. While the fee for the Ulpan will be reimbursed, there is a non-reimbursable copay of 200 NIS that is payable directly to the Ulpan. Details can be found here.

Online Ulpan – If you cannot fit an Ulpan into your weekly schedule, or if there are no Ulpan courses in your area, there are many e-learning options that you can use at home, for a fee (you may be eligible for a voucher if you have extenuating circumstances).
Hebrewbyte is an online Ulpan subsidized by Misrad Haklita for eligible Olim and Aliyah candidates. Students learn at their own pace. Participation is available for a nominal fee of 50 NIS. One can study Hebrew with Hebrewbyte at the same time as either a public or private Ulpan.
Hebrew Connect offers small, conversation-based group classes designed for Pre or Post Aliyah Olim (or anyone else interested in learning Hebrew) led by professional teachers. Our courses emphasize active participation, helping students build confidence and fluency through interactive, personalized learning. All classes are partially subsidized by Nefesh B’Nefesh, with additional discounts available for Olim.
These programs offer you the opportunity to tailor your Hebrew language education to your schedule as well as your personal educational needs. If you’re just starting the process – don’t be overwhelmed! Learning Hebrew online is no different than sitting in a classroom to learn any other subject. This time, the classroom happens to be virtual, making it easier for you to fit it into your schedule. The course that you are going to design for yourself progresses just like any other course; you are not expected to learn the whole syllabus on the first day. Take it slow, and remember – persistence is key!
The online educational resources that are listed below are divided by type: professional classes, online resources, video classes/podcasts, and children’s resources. The websites and products are just a sample of what is now available; others can be found using the Internet.
It is important to verify, prior to beginning or committing to an Ulpan, with your Misrad H’Aliyah V’Haklita coordinator, whether the specific Ulpan’s costs will be covered.
You can be in touch with them via your Misrad H’Aliyah V’Haklita Portal
