The Step-By-Step Aliyah Process

Nefesh B’Nefesh works in cooperation with the Jewish Agency for Israel to facilitate the Aliyah process through our joint application. The following is an overview of how to submit your application and required documents for Aliyah from North America, along with the subsequent steps. Comprehensive details are provided on our website, and you can reach out to us for assistance at any time.

Step 1

The Aliyah Application

Begin your paperwork 8-10 months before your estimated Aliyah date by completing the Aliyah application on the nbn.org.il website. Shortly after submitting the application, you will be assigned a Nefesh B’Nefesh Aliyah Advisor.

Step 2

The Documents

Once you complete the application, you will need to upload the following documents for you and each family member:

  • Valid Passport (Israeli when applicable
  • Proof of Judaism/Conversion

  • Civil Certificates w/ Apostilles:
    Birth, Marriage, Divorce, & Death

  • Criminal Background Check(s) (valid for 6 months)

  • Proof of Living Abroad (varies)
  • Additional Forms/Documents as requested

Step 3

The Jewish Agency Interview

Once you’ve completed your application and uploaded the required documents, Nefesh B’Nefesh notifies the Jewish Agency to review your application and decide whether to invite you for an interview. During the interview with your Jewish Agency representative (Shaliach), you will be asked to present the originals of your documents (see step 2), which will be returned to you during the meeting.

Step 4

Approval For Aliyah

The Jewish Agency for Israel will inform you of your Aliyah based on the criteria set by the Israeli government, or if additional documents are required. If approved, you will receive what is known as the “Mazal Tov” letter in an email directly from the Jewish Agency, providing instructions for your next steps.

Step 5

Obtain Your Aliyah Visa

An Aliyah visa is required unless you possess an Israeli passport. Instructions on how to apply for a visa will be provided with your Aliyah approval (Mazal Tov email) from the Jewish Agency.  It can take 18 business days, or more, for the visa to be issued, depending on the time of year and where you live.
We recommend applying 1-2 months before your estimated departure. Once issued, the Aliyah visa is valid for 6 months.

Step 6

The Aliyah Flight

Nefesh B’Nefesh and the Jewish Agency for Israel’s flight benefit includes a one-way ticket on a Nefesh B’Nefesh scheduled EL AL flight.

Upon receiving your Aliyah flight benefit approval from the Jewish Agency, the Nefesh B’Nefesh Flights Department will contact you, inviting you to submit a flight request based on available flight options.
