Overview of the Aliyah Application Process
from North America

You’ve had those Aliyah thoughts and finally started to build a practical plan for what your life will be like in Israel.  Once you have begun the research, the first significant step in the Aliyah process is to start and complete an application. We recommend doing so six to eight months before your estimated Aliyah date. As part of the application process, The Jewish Agency for Israel requires you to submit photocopies of the following documents (when relevant, additional documents are occasionally requested)

  • Birth certificate
  • Passport
  • Proof of Judaism letter
  • Marriage and/or divorce certificates
  • Criminal background check
  • Name change certificates

Upon submission of your application, you will receive access to a personal web page which will allow you to track the status of your Aliyah file, upload documents and update your information, see which documents still need to be added.

Having completed an application you will then need to meet for an interview with your local Aliyah Shaliach (a representative from The Jewish Agency for Israel). You will be asked to present all the original documents you submitted in step 1. If you are making Aliyah from the United Kingdom, the Shaliach will open a Tik Aliyah (Aliyah file) on your behalf. For a listing of local Shlichim, click here.

The Jewish Agency is the body responsible for authorizing Aliyah according to the Law of Return, while Nefesh B’Nefesh provides Aliyah services and resources.  Approval from the Jewish Agency for Israel will determine what government benefits your are eligible to receive.  Meanwhile Nefesh B’Nefesh is working to review your Aliyah plan and assist in any bureaucratic issues and share the resources needed to solidify your post-Aliyah plan.  Each organization reviews your application and sends separate notification letters.
After your housing plans have solidified, you can arrange your Aliyah flight, which is an unforgettable experience. There are options for joining a monthly Aliyah group (40-80 Olim together) or on a charter flight (the whole plane is full with Olim, but only available in the summer) – if these dates do not work for you, you can arrange an flexible Aliyah flight at your convenience and depending on seasonal availability – visit our flight options and dates page to learn more.

Nefesh B’Nefesh services continue well beyond your actual Aliyah date, including a wide range of social events, activities, informational workshops and seminars for new Olim which are advertised on our online calendar as well as the NBN Facebook group and email list. To subscribe to the Nefesh B’Nefesh email list, email [email protected]. We encourage you to take advantage of our Post Aliyah Guide to learn about the step-by-step process involved in the initial days and weeks after your arrival.  Please don’t hesitate to contact our Post-Aliyah coordinators who can assist you with the initial acclimation to your new home in Israel.
