Do you need to know Hebrew in order to work as a Esthetician in Israel?

In order to take a mani/pedi course, you need to know basic Hebrew. There are no courses in English so it’s important you have some basic Hebrew going in. Knowing Hebrew can widen the variety of clientele, whereas not knowing Hebrew will limit your market.

What certification do I need and where can I obtain it?

There is a wide variety of courses you can take in order to learn to be an esthetician. The courses generally last between 4 weeks to a few months, with certificates upon completion. A few of the different courses are: GG Academy in Be’er Sheva, Diana in Tel Aviv, Yullia School in a few locations around the country, Ravit Asaf and more…

What if I have a degree and/or did a course for Esthetics in the US?

If you studied cosmetics and nails in America you can start right away building a business. I would suggest attending the free business course offered by MATI in Jerusalem. MATI supplies a free course on building an online website so you can attract more people to your business. In addition to that, MATI has a paying course where you can learn how to run a business successfully. In that course, you will learn how to open your own small business in Israel.

Is there competition in this field? Is there a big demand?

There is significant competition between estheticians, but if you have something special to bring (a certain certificate, better products or ever cheaper prices), you will attract more clients. It’s also important to know how to use social media. Having a website, Instagram, Tik Tok and Facebook can only expand and enlarge your business and name. Winter is a slower time to work, so I use this time to improve my technique, and reach out to more clients (updating website, posting on social media, etc.)

What are the benefits of working in this field?

Working as an esthetician is a competitive but rewarding field. For starters, most estheticians work from home, which allows them more time to spend with family. Building your own business can be challenging, but being your own boss is very comfortable. You work when you want, you’re in charge of your hours, and your salary is dependent on you.

What is the salary in this field?

The salary is very much dependent on you and how many clients you see.

A special thank you to Hanah Tetro, self employed esthetician for participating in this interview.

Please provide us with a brief description of your field.
I am an esthetician. I do facials, waxing, laser hair removal, manicure, and pedicures for clients. I also provide my clients with advice about how to care for their skin at home.

What is your current position?
I am currently self-employed and work from home.

What types of backgrounds are relevant for someone looking to work as an esthetician?
In order to be an esthetician, you need to attend an esthetics school and study for several hundred hours. You need to receive hands on training for waxing and facials. In order to do manicures and pedicures, you need to take a separate (much shorter) course.

What education and experience should an Oleh looking to become an esthetician come with?
An Oleh looking to work as an esthetician in Israel should have either received the proper training in the country they immigrated from or sign-up for a course in Israel.

Is there any kind of license or certification you need, to work as an esthetician in Israel?
Estheticians in Israel pass a test administered by the Ministry of Trade and Industry once they finish their course. There is no license in Israel for working as an esthetician. You can use your diploma from abroad to work as an esthetician in Israel.

How important is Hebrew in your field?
In order to reach the widest possible client base, Hebrew is very important in this field. If you cannot speak Hebrew well, you will be very limited in reaching clients since communicating with those people who do not speak your native language will be very difficult.

What are the benefits of your job?
There are many benefits to being an esthetician but one of the main ones is the positive interactions that you have with your clients by helping them relax and feel good about their appearance.

Is this employment more in demand in certain areas of Israel?
I think being an esthetician is pretty much in demand everywhere in Israel.

What is the salary range?
Very hard to say. Your salary can vary tremendously from month to month. If you work for someone else as opposed to working for yourself you will either be paid a commission on each service or an hourly rate.

Do you have any other advice or tips for Olim?
Being an esthetician in Israel is a competitive field. Find something that is unique about you or the services you provide in order to stand out.

How do you feel about working and living in Israel?
I am happy to be living and working in Israel.
