When I arrive on Aliyah will I have to go into quarantine?2021-07-15T11:50:21+03:00
Updated: July 15, 2021

A 14-day quarantine is still required of all those landing in Israel. This can be shortened to 7 days upon receiving two negative PCR tests. The first test is mandatory and completed at the airport. The second test must be performed no earlier than your 7th day of quarantine. Once you receive a negative result, you are released from quarantine.

If you were vaccinated abroad or recovered from Coronavirus, you can shorten your quarantine by performing a serological test to prove antibodies. Once you have the results, you must upload them to the Ministry of Health website and wait for them to release you.

Travelers may quarantine at home if they can meet the following criteria:

1. Presenting a home quarantine declaration:
2. Committing to having the appropriate conditions to stay in complete home quarantine.
3. Committing to arriving at the place of quarantine without using public transportation (excluding taxis).
4.  Performing a Corona test at the airport.

Additional guidelines for those arriving from abroad can be found here

Hotel quarantine is still available to those who can not correctly perform home quarantine. The hotels are run by the IDF’s Home Front Command and include daily meals and few other services. Hotels are not a vacation spot and you will be required to stay in your room for the duration of your stay. If you are arriving with your family, you will receive rooms to accommodate your whole family and may not all be in the same room.

Since the regulations for self-isolation and Corona hotels change often, it is best to concentrate on all other aspects of your Aliyah plan and be in touch with your Aliyah advisor as you approach your Aliyah date to get the most recent updates.

How do I obtain an Aliyah visa?2021-03-22T16:40:15+02:00

Updated: March 22, 2021

Upon getting Jewish Agency approval for Aliyah you are now eligible for an Aliyah visa. Aliyah visas are issued by the Israeli Consulate and coordinated through the Jewish Agency.

Visa services are operating! If you have approval for Aliyah from the Jewish Agency please contact your regional Jewish Agency representative to coordinate the delivery of your passport and issuance of your visa.

Are criminal background checks now mandatory to be approved for Aliyah?2021-10-10T12:19:39+03:00
Updated: March 22, 2021

Yes, the Israeli Ministry of Interior (Misrad Hapnim) has recently decided that authenticated criminal background checks are required for all Olim, regardless of their country of origin. This is a relatively new requirement for those making Aliyah from outside of Israel.

Despite restrictions on public services available in some areas of North America, this service is still fully available.

There are two parts to fulfilling this requirement:

PART 1: Getting the background check

PART 2: Authentication:

FOR US CITIZENS:  For FBI background checks in the USA – getting an apostille attached by the US State Department in Washington DC.

FOR CANADIAN CITIZENS: Canadian “Certified Criminal Record Check” needs to be authenticated by Canadian Global Affairs and the Israeli consulate in Canada.

Both stages are still fully available. Expect a significant delay in processing time for the federal apostille.

Resources and more information to help clarify the steps for acquiring this document can be found here: nbn.org.il/background-checks

You must have your background check in order to have your Aliyah interview.

During this period of isolation, how can I be interviewed by the Jewish Agency?2021-03-22T16:41:21+02:00
Updated: March 22, 2021

Currently all Jewish Agency offices in North America are closed to the public and in-person interviews are unavailable.

As an alternative, the Jewish Agency is conducting online video interviews. Interviews are intended for those who have submitted all the required documents and completed their Aliyah portfolio. However, due to the situation the Jewish Agency will interview applicants who have submitted crucial documents and can at a later stage complete the full set of required documents.

If you have submitted scans of the following documents to your online application you may qualify for an online video interview with the Jewish Agency – passport, birth certificate, marital status documents if applicable (marriage, divorce, death), letter from a rabbi stating you are Jewish or conversion documents.

To arrange your online interview with the Jewish Agency:

  1. Contact the Jewish Agency’s Global Center
USA: 1-866-835-0430, CANADA: 1-866-421-8912, Email: [email protected]
  2. You will be instructed to mail the above original documents to your regional Jewish Agency representative with a return mailing label. We recommend you use a courier.
  3. Once the documents have been received, the Jewish Agency will contact you to schedule your appointment.
  4. Upon completion of your interview the Jewish Agency will return your documents using the shipping label you enclosed.
  5. You may be required to submit any additional documents to the Jewish Agency following your meeting to complete your portfolio and get approval for your Aliyah.
Can I apply for Aliyah from North America at this time?2021-03-22T16:41:33+02:00
Updated: March 22, 2021

Yes, you can! Please visit nbn.org.il/apply/ to start your application.

The NBN Online Application allows you to complete the forms required for Aliyah approval from the Jewish Agency for Israel and for assistance from Nefesh B’Nefesh – ALL IN ONE APPLICATION.

As you work your way through the application and getting your documents together, we are here to answer your questions and ensure that you know exactly what to do.

If you have questions regarding the application, please email [email protected]. Once you have completed the online application one of our Aliyah advisors will be in touch to guide you through the next steps.

What is a Lone Soldier?2017-09-13T13:00:37+03:00

A Lone Soldier is an IDF soldier whose parents live abroad and who has chosen to leave his/her country of origin to serve and protect the State of Israel.

What is Friends of the IDF (FIDF)?2017-09-13T12:55:33+03:00

FIDF was established in the US in 1981 by a group of Holocaust survivors. Its mission is to initiate and support educational, social, cultural and recreational programs and facilities for the young male and female soldiers of Israel who defend the Jewish homeland. FIDF also provides support for the families of fallen soldiers.

What is Nefesh B’Nefesh?2017-09-13T12:53:31+03:00

The core mission of Nefesh B’Nefesh is to revitalize Aliyah and to substantially increase the number of future Olim (immigrants) to Israel. Nefesh B’Nefesh helps remove the professional, logistical and financial obstacles that prevent many individuals from actualizing their dreams. In the process of fulfilling its’ mission, NBN aims to educate and inspire the Jews of the Diaspora as to the centrality of the Jewish State to the Jewish people and its desirability as a Jewish home.

What is the Lone Soldiers Program (LSP)?2017-09-13T12:50:25+03:00

LSP was created as a joint venture between FIDF and Nefesh B’Nefesh with the goal of providing support and assistance to Lone Soldiers in the IDF.

Who is funding this program?2017-09-13T12:49:11+03:00

The Lone Soldiers Program is supported by FIDF and the Government of Israel.

Is the Lone Soldiers Program supported by the IDF?2017-09-13T12:47:58+03:00

The IDF recognizes LSP as a resource for Lone Soldiers and shares information and resources to ensure that the soldiers are supported and never feel alone.

What do I need to apply to this program?2017-09-13T12:45:23+03:00

If you made or are making Aliyah through Nefesh B’Nefesh, send an email to [email protected].

If you made Aliyah through the Jewish Agency for Israel, you can register for the program here.

If you are volunteering for the IDF as a foreign volunteer (Mahal), register here.

What makes the Lone Soldiers Program different from other Lone Soldier organizations?2017-09-13T12:45:17+03:00

The Lone Soldiers Program provides Lone Soldiers with a number of unique resources. LSP has connections with the army and various governmental bodies (including direct contact with a representative in Meitav), distributes a financial grant before a lone soldier drafts, social events, army prep-days, post-army workshops, and more.

How does an Oleh obtain Lone Soldier Status?2017-09-13T12:41:06+03:00

Upon meeting with a Mashakit Tash (army social worker) at your Tzav Rishon (first notice) you can officially receive Lone Soldier Status.

After receiving Lone Soldier Status, what do I receive from the IDF?2017-09-13T12:40:00+03:00

Lone soldiers have a number of rights and benefits such as financial support, housing assistance, and extra vacation days. You can read more about Lone Soldier benefits here.

After completing my required army service, are there any additional benefits?2017-09-13T12:38:49+03:00

Your release from the IDF is what we call a “second Aliyah” and it is an opportune time to help Olim integrate into the civilian Israeli society. We offer post-army workshops, employment consultations (including updating resumes, job placement services, career counseling and more), higher education resources, budgeting and housing information, and ongoing social events.

If my parents live in Israel, am I disqualified from participating in this program?2017-09-13T12:37:05+03:00

LSP was created to provide a family-like support system to Olim serving in the IDF who do not have family living in Israel. Therefore, the program is only available for Olim without parents in Israel.

Who should I contact with questions regarding my IDF service?2017-09-13T12:34:39+03:00

You can reach out to our dedicated staff during every stage of your draft process and IDF service by calling 1-800-071-400 or emailing [email protected].

How long is the required IDF service?2017-09-13T12:33:11+03:00

The army determines your length of service based on your family status (single, married, etc.) and Age of Arrival to the country (this can be different from your official Aliyah date). You can contact [email protected] for more information or read about Length of Service here.

Is it possible to expedite my draft?2017-09-13T12:31:39+03:00

Although the IDF will make the final decision regarding your draft, your LSP advisor can put in a request with the army to expedite your draft.

Is there assistance available for finding housing?2017-09-13T12:30:55+03:00

Although LSP does not provide housing placements, we work closely with different Kibbutzim and adoptive families. If you are a Lone Soldier and want to live on a Kibbutz, we can connect you with the person in charge of housing placement (this is an option only upon enlistment). If you are interested in an adoptive family, please contact [email protected].

Does the army provide an Ulpan?2017-09-13T12:28:54+03:00

Most Olim are offered a free Ulpan as part of their Aliyah-benefits package. In addition, all potential soldiers undergo a Hebrew test during their Tzav Rishon. Based on their test results, Olim may participate in a 3-month Hebrew course at Michve Alon, the duration of which is counted as part of their IDF service. Olim can also request to do an “Ulpanit” (a supplemental, one-month Ulpan) later during their service. However, we advise Olim not to depend on these opportunities as the sole resource for learning Hebrew.

I’m a Mahal participant who wants to make Aliyah. How will that affect my army service?2017-09-13T13:28:11+03:00

Making Aliyah during or after your service can affect your length of service. Contact [email protected] to receive more information regarding your specific situation.

I am in Mahal and have not made Aliyah, am I eligible for assistance?2017-09-13T12:25:26+03:00

Yes. The Lone Soldiers Program works closely with Mahal. Participants can reach out to LSP for guidance and utilize all of LSP’s resources.

Are Garin Tzabar participants eligible for FIDF & Nefesh B’Nefesh assistance?2017-09-13T12:24:07+03:00

Yes. When filling out the application, mark off that you are planning on participating in the Garin Tzabar program.

If you hold citizenship from any other country, in order to begin the Aliyah process you must contact the Jewish Agency for Israel to arrange your Aliyah from abroad. If you hold citizenship from any other country but currently reside in Israel, contact Misrad Hapnim (Ministry of Interior).
