Childhood Chisunim (Vaccinations)

Childhood Chisunim are given at Tipat Chalav (well-baby clinics) and in school. If your child is born in Israel, you will receive a Pinkas Chisunim (vaccination booklet) when the baby is born, before you leave the hospital. If your child is born abroad, a Pinkas Chisunim will be issued at your first Tipat Chalav visit. It is imperative that you bring this Pinkas Chisunim every time you take your child to be vaccinated, as by law your child cannot be vaccinated without it. Vaccinating your child is not required by law in Israel.

Recommended Ages for Chisunim

The vaccines provided for babies and children as part of the vaccination program are:

  • 5-in-1 vaccine (tetanus-diphtheria-whooping cough + Haemophilus influenzae type B + polio)
  • 4-in-1 vaccine (3-in-1: measles-mumps-rubella + chicken pox)
  • Immunization against pneumococcus bacteria (Prevenar)
  • Vaccine against hepatitis B
  • Vaccine against hepatitis A
  • Vaccine against rotavirus

Vaccine against Influenza

The Ministry of Health recommends that the entire population receive the vaccine against influenza every year, at all ages, beginning with six-months-old babies. The vaccine is given at the HMOs (Kupot Cholim).

Paid Vaccines

There are certain vaccines, which are recommended by the Ministry of Health, but which are not included in the health basket and need to be paid for:

  • Vaccine against cervical cancer from the papilloma virus for girls aged 9 and above.
  • Two doses of the chicken pox vaccine:
For children who have not yet received a vaccine against chicken pox, the vaccine in first grade will be the first dose. It is recommended to complete the second dose as well, privately, through the Kupat Cholim.
For children whose parents have, in the past, purchased the first dose, the vaccine in first grade will serve as the second dose, completing the vaccination course.
  • For children who were born before the routine vaccine against chicken pox was initiated – it is recommended that they receive both doses of the vaccine.

You are advised to inquire at your Kupat Cholim about receiving the vaccine and the way of purchasing it.

Immunizations for Foreign Travel

According to the Ministry of Health’s website:

Travelers abroad are advised to consult with the staff at the travelers’ clinics regarding the necessity to receive immunizations and preventive treatment. This consultation should be made at least 6 weeks prior to the date of departure, since there are certain immunizations which are administered in a series of doses.

The decision on providing the immunization, immunization boosters or preventive treatment is given to each individual on a case-by-case basis at the travelers’ clinics at the health bureaus (there are also travelers’ clinics at the HMOs, hospitals etc.). The decision is made based on the traveler’s immunization state, his travel conditions and the length of travel.

To ensure the ability to complete the entire regime of recommended immunizations, it is advisable to refer to the travelers’ clinics – it is recommended to refer to the travelers’ clinic at least 6 weeks prior to the date of departure.
