US Social Security in Israel

As a US citizen, you may be concerned about working in Israel if you have taken early retirement or wondering how to have your social security check deposited into your Israeli bank account.

If you are living in Israel and wish to have your Social Security payments transferred directly into your Israeli bank account, you have a few options:

  • Send an email to [email protected]. In the subject line include the last 4 digits of your social security number. In the body of the email include your name, social security number, Israel contact information (phone and email) and bank details as listed above.
  • It is not necessary to fill out this specific form from social security. However, if you do decide to do so, it can then be left at the drop off box at the FBU office; address listed below.
  • As a reminder, Social Security benefits are exempt from taxation per article 21 of the US-Israel tax treaty.

Windfall Elimination Program is repealed!
For the past 40 years, the Social Security Administration has implemented a program know as the “Windfall Elimination Program”, or “WEP” for short. The WEP reduced social security benefits for retirees that also drew on private Israeli pensions.
The impact of WEP was to reduce monthly Social Security Payments by up to 50%. Obviously, this had a significant negative impact on the monthly budget for many retirees. In January 2025, President Biden signed into law H.R. 82 – Social Security Fairness Act of 2023. This law has ELIMINATED the WEP! Monthly payments will now increase to the full monthly benefit that the retiree is entitled to. In addition, retirees will be compensated retroactively for payments received back to 01-Jan-2024.
