Nurse Practitioner (NP) – Achot Mumchit – אחות מומחית

It is important to understand that the education and training of nurses in Canada and the US is significantly different in both content and structure than in Israel. The role of a Nurse Practitioner in Israel does exist, although it is only now becoming more common and remains mainly hospital-based. Click here to learn more.

Achot Mumchit Process

The process of gaining recognition as a Nurse Practitioner in Israel can be long. After passing the RN exam and obtaining the permanent license, it is advised that NPs seek specialty recognition to enhance their income and scope of practice.

Foreign-trained NPs must meet Israeli criteria (found below) and take the Achot Mumchit course to practice in Israel. This process may take a significant amount of time, and completing a specialist training course is also recommended.

An NP who already has a specialty can apply for Israeli recognition of their specialist training (השתלמות על-בסיסית) from the Israeli Ministry of Health (MOH). They must submit proof of equivalent training and work experience to the ministry. For more information about this, email [email protected].

A new update to the process: NPs with a full year of experience working as an NP can now directly take the RN exam and obtain a permanent license, without the prerequisite of working as an RN for a year. Subsequently, they can proceed to have their NP credentials recognized.

*RNs will most likely need to convert/recognize their degrees via Minhal HaSiud. In some cases they may be asked to go to the Ministry of Education but it is at the discretion of Minhal HaSiud who will need to do this. NPs will need to go through the Ministry of Education in order to take the exam.

Steps

  1. Submit your documentation and having your file approved.
  2. After submitting documentation, Ministry of Health will inform you of the educational requirements you still need to complete.
  3. Passing the licensing exam.
  4. Hebrew proficiency.
  5. Have your degree recognized by the Israeli Ministry of Education. Click here for more information.

Notarized copies of documents and proof of work experience can be mailed (by registered mail) to: Nursing Division – Ministry of Health 39 Jeremiah St. Jerusalem, 9446724.

Achot Mumchit Course

The course to become an Achot Mumchit (Israeli Nurse Practitioner) lasts about a year and is held in an academic setting. The course includes theoretical and practical sections, followed by governmental licensing exams (written and oral).

In order to participate in the course, a Registered Nurse must be sent by a recognized organization and with a guarantee to be hired as a Nurse Practitioner in the same organization.

If an NP possesses a license to practice in a field of expertise recognized in Israel, they may qualify for exemption from the course (though not the test), pending document verification. Please submit the necessary documents to Dr. Hila Figel at [email protected].

Please note: Due to the nature of the work, high-level Hebrew is critical.

The following four criteria must be met in order to be accepted to the course:

  • Licensed as an RN in Israel.
  • Graduate of an Israeli Specialty Training Course (השתלמות על-בסיסית).
  • Master’s degree recognized by the Israeli Ministry of Education (at least one of the degrees must be in nursing).
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in the relevant field.
