Kiryat Gat, founded in 1954 as a development town in Israel’s Southern District, has long served as a regional hub. Located on its northern side, lies Carmei Gat—a planned neighborhood built roughly 56 km from Tel Aviv and about 43 km from Be’er Sheva. Carmei Gat was developed under Israel’s first “roof agreement” model, in which housing, roads, schools, parks, and utilities were planned together so the area could function from the moment residents moved in. Recent development has been rapid: the neighborhood has grown to roughly 10,000 housing units, with plans to double Kiryat Gat’s population in the coming years.

Kiryat Gat is well-connected by public transportation. The city has an Israel Railways station along with a strong network of intercity buses, giving residents direct routes to major centers such as Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Beer Sheva. Getting around within the city itself is mainly handled by local bus lines, and shared Sherut taxis offer a widely used private alternative for shorter trips.
