Sherut Leumi: Signing up from within Israel Pre-Aliyah
The Process of Signing up for Sherut Leumi Pre-Aliyah
Step 1: Research
Think about what type of volunteer work you’re interested in doing and where in the country you’d like to be placed. Reach out to women who have held those positions and ask for their insights and advice.
Step 2: Connect with a Rakezet (Coordinator)
Contact a Rakezet from one of the Sherut Leumi organizations.
Click here for a complete list of Bat Sherut organizations and their contact information.
Your Rakezet will help guide you through the registration process on the Sherut Leumi websites and assist you in exploring organizations that match your interests.
Step 3: Sign Up for a Yom Sayarot
What is Yom Sayarot?
Yom Sayarot is a special day when you can explore different Sherut Leumi opportunities. Typically, you’ll tour facilities, go through an interview, meet with staff, and learn more about the placement.
When is it?
The dates are usually released in January, and you’ll have about a week to register. Sign up through the Sherut websites or with help from your Rakezet.
Tip: Register early as spots are limited!
How many Sayarot should I attend?
Aim for 3–6 different Sayarot. You want to have options, but too many can become overwhelming.
Note: Most Sayarot begin around February, but some, like those for the Ministry of Defense (Misrad HaBitachon), may start earlier.
How to Register for Yom Sayarot
Registration is done through the website of each organization offering the placement.
Look up available dates (there are often multiple options) and click the sign-up button. You’ll receive a confirmation email once you’ve registered.
For Beit Hayeled (children’s homes), the registration process is a bit different and involves additional steps. Be sure to check with your Sherut organization for details.
Step 4: Attend Yom Sayarot & Prepare for your interview
Practice answering basic questions about yourself in Hebrew:
- A short personal introduction
- Why you want to work in this organization
- Why you’re the best choice for the job
It’s helpful to learn some field-specific vocabulary ahead of time.
Most importantly, try not to be nervous! The interview is for them to get to know you—and for you to decide if the placement feels right for you.
Step 5: Results
If Accepted: Mazal tov!
– Confirm your placement with the Sherut organization
– Let your Rakezet know
– Wait for the organization to contact you regarding training seminar information
If Not Accepted: No worries!
-There are many opportunities that are still available
– Attend a second round of Sayarot
– Let your Rakezet know you are still looking
