A Day in Beer Sheva

For me- this year has been about dreams coming true. Ever since I can remember myself, it was my dream to study medicine. Upon receiving my acceptance letter to Ben Gurion University’s Medical School, my husband and I packed up our things and moved to the capital of the south- Beer Sheva.

Part of what makes BGU’s med program so special, is that they put a big focus on caring and communicating with the patient. And thus, as a first year student I have one day a week where I actually spend time in the hospital learning about how doctors should interact with patients. No other med program in Israel allows first year students to put on medical gowns and come face to face with real patients.

Every month we learn about a different ward and get to know that part of the hospital. This past month I delved into the world of pediatrics. I got to spend time in the neonatal ward learning to recognize signs of diseases or problems in babies that were just hours old. I learned how to perform a medical interview while addressing the child and the parent. I spent a day in the pediatric ICU learning to understand the medical equipment used on children. They even took us to Rahat- the largest Beduin city in Israel (populated by 80,000 people!) to see a children’s clinic and learn about the special medical needs the Beduin population have. The children’s ward in Soroka Hospital is a beautiful new building donated by Mr. Chaim Saban. The ward is movie themed, filled with paintings and animations of different Disney movies. Each child receives a personal ipad while he is hospitalized, and can even go see a Disney movie in the movie theatre inside the ward! The best part about this past month was watching the medical staff at work- putting so much care and attention into each and every child, making them forget, even if just for a little, how bad their situation really is. For me- it was a constant reminder of why I love medicine so much.

And not only has my first month of school been amazing- but so has life in Beer Sheva! As an army wife married to a combat officer who comes home once in about two weeks, I was nervous about moving away from my family and friends, remaining utterly alone. On the contrary- I have found that I barely have any quiet time to myself! We moved into the married couples’ section of the university dorms. Little did I know what an incredible community life I was going to get along with it. People here have been so kind and warm causing me to feel at home instantly. I have been invited out for most dinners of the week since I got here and have already made many friends. As a girl who grew up in a “Yishuv” (sort of a country suburb) I am also loving the new city life. Everything in Beer Sheva is so close and convenient- if it’s not a ten minute walk, it’s a five minute bus ride away. With all the events happening in the city- both for students and local families including concerts, fairs and top notch stand-up comedy- I am surprised people get any work done here at all.

Finally, as I am expecting my first child, G-d willing to be born this coming March, I couldn’t be happier to be living here right now. Between the family oriented community, the concern and help I have been getting from fellow neighbors here and even the excellent prenatal yoga classes I started taking, I am certain I can raise my child here wholeheartedly. Next week I start my clinical days in the gynecology ward- should be interesting!
