• Car insurance includes two main components: Chova (compulsory insurance), which defines who is permitted to drive the car, and Makif (comprehensive insurance), which covers theft and damage from accidents.

• Mortgage requirements: In order to receive a mortgage, you must have both life insurance and building insurance.

• Always negotiate: Insurance rates in Israel are not fixed, and bargaining is expected.

• Supplementary health insurance: All insurers offer additional health insurance plans that may cover services not included in your Kupat Cholim coverage.

• Using an agent vs. going direct:
  While some large insurance companies allow customers to purchase policies directly, this is often not the best option for new Olim. Direct insurers typically do not assign a personal agent, meaning you may speak with a different representative each time and have limited advocacy if issues arise.

  Working with an insurance agent or firm, especially one experienced in assisting Olim, can be highly beneficial during your first year or two in Israel. Agents can advocate on your behalf, help navigate language and bureaucracy, and often have practical workarounds for common challenges. This can be especially important for Olim who are quoted unusually high premiums due to a lack of Israeli insurance history, a frequent and significant factor.
