The Barzilai Medical Center, located in the southwest district of the city of Ashkelon, is a medium-large hospital boasting 650 beds. It plays a vital role in catering to a population of 500,000 citizens, spanning the cities of Ashkelon, Kiryat Gat, and Sderot, as well as the rural areas surrounding the Gaza envelope.

Given its proximity to the Gaza border (just seven miles away), the hospital has undergone specialized training to manage complex trauma cases and to provide essential medical services during times of conflict when the facility becomes a target for rocket attacks. Notably, during the October 7 war, the hospital demonstrated exceptional professionalism and compassion by delivering medical treatment to thousands of soldiers and civilians in the region.

Barzilai stands as an academic medical center, affiliated with Ben Gurion University, welcoming hundreds of medical students annually. Currently undergoing expansion, the hospital is transforming into a Level 1 Trauma Center.

Beyond its medical role, both the medical center and the broader region are actively engaged in the resettlement of cities and kibbutzim in the Gaza envelope. This concerted effort is aimed at restoring prosperity and vitality to the area, emphasizing a commitment to the well-being of the community amid challenging circumstances.
