Overview
The Times of Israel, the largest English-language news publisher covering Israel and the Jewish world, seeks a Social Media Manager. We’re looking for a rock star to join our multi-media team at The Times of Israel. A cross between social media management and content creation, plus helping on our podcast production. Must have excellent English and flexible work hours. Office is in Jerusalem, but some remote work is ok. This is a full-time position.
Responsibilities include:
- Overall responsibility for user engagement and growth of The Times of Israel’s social media channels, including Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, X (Twitter), YouTube Shorts, Threads, and BlueSky. We increasingly view these channels as endpoints for our journalism to reach audiences who consume news away from our site and podcasts, so your role as the manager of these channels is both creative and editorial in nature.
- Create social platform-native content: Produce vertical videos and compelling slideshows for Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts, focusing on breaking news, explainers, and trending topics.
- Translate news stories and longer analysis pieces into compelling social formats: boil them down to the essentials or reframe them to work well on mobile, social, and largely visual platforms.
- Craft strong hooks, intros, and visual first seconds to reduce drop-off and maximize engagement.
- Train traditional reporters on social video: Conduct workshops to help news staff develop social-native reporting and capture quick videos during assignments; take the lead on project managing their deliverables
- Help manage the full production cycle: scripting, shooting, editing, captioning, sound design, motion graphics, and post-production
- Experiment with trends, formats, and emerging tools (AR, AI, interactive, filters, etc.).
- Prioritize what stories to invest resources in, and what stories and platforms to automate our posting to
- Monitor and analyze social performance: Track metrics, engagement rates, and audience feedback to optimize content strategy and inform editorial decisions. Observe and learn from other news publishers’ effective social content.
- Ensure accuracy, fairness, editorial standards, rights permissions, and brand consistency in all content.
Requirements:
- Proven experience producing short-form social video/visual content (Reels, TikToks, Shorts, slideshows), ideally in a journalism or media context.
- Strong news sense: ability to assess what stories matter, why they matter to particular audiences, and how they can be told in a compelling social format.
- Strong visual sense: ability to frame, pace, pick visuals, design thumbnails, and guide aesthetic decisions.
- Solid technical skills: video shooting (on phone and camera), editing (e.g. Premiere Pro, Final Cut, CapCut, InShot, etc.), motion graphics or basic animation, audio, captioning.
- Familiarity with social media platform algorithms, trends, formats, constraints (lengths, aspect ratios, best practices).
- Excellent writing / scripting ability to craft succinct voiceovers, hooks, captions, and narrative pacing under constraints.
- Comfort with ambiguity and fast pivots, including the ability to work under tight deadlines and turn out content quickly.
- Data-driven mindset: experience generating and interpreting metrics (views, retention, drop-off, click-through, engagement) and iterating content based on performance.
- Collaborative spirit: ability to work across teams (reporters, editors, video, product/design) and provide constructive feedback/training.
- Familiarity with social media management and scheduling tools (e.g. Later, Hootsuite, Sprout, etc.)
- Identification with The Times of Israel’s journalistic principles and mission
- Strong Hebrew – a plus
