Judy Spitzberg: The Marketplace

For centuries, the marketplace was a vital forum for socializing and ‘parliamentary’ meet ups, as well as a venue for news declarations, drafting documents and of course, sales and bartering on food and wares.

Artists, musicians, poets and writers such as Pisarro, Rembrandt, Stravinsky, Mussorgsky and Isaac Bashevis Singer, as well as Israeli Naomi Shemer, describe these colorful bustling market scenes through their exotic melodies, vivid paintings, and powerful words.

We will explore the world of markets from Rome to Israel through various periods in history. This talk was inspired by the Jerusalem Museum of Art’s past exhibit called “The Shuk”.

Judy Spitzberg is a music and arts lecturer and director in several American and Israeli elementary schools, universities, orchestras and museums. She is presently teaching ‘English through the Arts’ at Levinsky College.
