Jr in Israel (Or, PLEASE Send Me to Israel)

Did I tell you how badly I would love to accompany the Nefesh B'Nefesh flight next week? In addition to Rafi G, Mother in Israel has also nominated me for the job and Jacob listed me as a runner-up. (Patronize their sites!)
The truth is I was disappointed with some of the bloggers who went on the flight last year, as they didn't really blog that much about the families they were paired with. I hope I get to go this year and relay one aliyah story the way it deserves to be told.

This past year we visited Israel. To read more about my solo flights with Jr (because of the Mrs's work schedule), click here.

We barreled down Rechov Rachel Imenu—I love Israeli street names—in Modi’in with the music of Nuri Alon blaring from the speakers. We turned left and waited behind a line of cars to continue onto Shederot Menachem Begin. (Did I mention how much I love Israeli street names?) On our right was an empty field of tightly packed weeds and bushes that swayed in the gentle wind. “Look,” Jr exclaimed poetically, “the trees are dancing to the music.”

On the drive back from Eilat via Mitzpe Ramon we encountered a fierce sandstorm. As visibility became more difficult I slowed down and put on the caution lights. “That’s so silly,” a confused Jr wondered out loud. “The car is telling you to turn right and left?!” (We eventually had to pull off the road, which marked the only time in my life I felt it was not safe to continue driving.)

Every time I went afoul of the GPS unit’s directions it chirped מעדכן מסלול, i.e., it was updating the directions. This, however, confused Jr., who kept on asking if we are driving over a train track like we had recently done in Woodmere. (He knows מסלול in the sense of a train track.)

While visiting Yossi and Leora, I took Jr into the bathroom to make a no. 1. The water in the toilet was colored blue from the cleanser that dangled on its side. “Look Abba,” he said gleefully as he emptied himself, “the blue water is turning green.” And so he learned that blue and yellow combine to make green.
