Channel 10 will devote extensive air time on Sunday to captive soldier Gilad Shalit amid the progress in talks to win his release. Sunday evening's broadcast schedule will feature a film about the life of the Shalit family over the past year, which includes the family's first look at a video of the soldier in captivity. It was the only video handed over to Israel since the staff sergeant's abduction. The film will be followed by a panel discussion about the price to be paid for Shalit's release. (Ruta Kupfer)
A 27-year-old Acre resident was moderately to severely injured yesterday when an explosive device exploded in his home. Both his hands were blown off, he sustained injuries to his abdomen, and the home was substantially damaged. Police suspect that the man himself assembled the explosive charge, and it exploded at his home due to a technical problem. Police said the explosion occurred shortly after the injured man returned home, and another unexploded explosive charge was found near the device that exploded. Police believe the incident is criminal and not terrorist in nature. (Jack Khoury)
Nefesh B'Nefesh has teamed up with the local branch of JDate to help connect new immigrants with potential dates, the aliyah assistance group said yesterday. Ahead of next month's arrival of some 100 North American singles, JDate Israel will set up a special section on its homepage, inviting Israeli singles to create profiles and immigrants to browse through them. Interest in singles flights, and the singles on them, has risen since 100 singles immigrated together in September. Initially, the special section will be accessible only to immigrants arriving December 29, but Nefesh B'Nefesh said it plans to expand the service. (Raphael Ahren)
The Tel Aviv District Court yesterday sentenced Rafi Ohana to life in prison and an additional 20 years, and his brother Moshe and another defendant, Charlie Sheetrit, to life in prison plus 10 years in connection with the 2004 murder of Haim Shabi and the manslaughter of Tomer Shabbat, an innocent bystander, at Shabbat's barber shop in Hod Hasharon. The crime was in revenge for the murder of the Ohanas' brother, Hanania, who was allegedly killed in connection with a dispute involving the Alperons and Abergils, two reputed crime families. The Be'er Sheva District Court yesterday acquitted reputed criminal Yaniv Zaguri and four other defendants of membership in an organized crime organization, for lack of sufficient evidence. The court convicted them of committing a number of other offenses, though. Zaguri was convicted of conspiracy to commit a crime, weapons offenses, extortion and vandalism of property - for placing a grenade near the home of an intelligence official at a Be'er Sheva prison which killed the official's dog. The indictment in the case said the crime was committed to deter the official, Emil Tzalah, from mistreating a friend of Zaguri's who was incarcerated at the prison. (Ofra Edelman) |
