Oilman Gives $8.5 Million To Jewish Causes
|
| |
Guma Aguiar, an oil magnate who founded Leor Energy and is credited with identifying one of the largest North American natural gas deposits, has donated $8.5 million to two Jewish organizations. Aguiar and his wife, Jamie, gave $8 million to Nefesh B’Nefesh, the aliyah organization, along with $500,000 to March of the Living, which takes Jews internationally to Auschwitz and other Holocaust sites in Poland. The couple will be co-chairs of the next March, in April.
Aguiar, 31, was born Jewish but raised as an evangelical Christian, returning to his Jewish roots in the last few years. For his work in the oil business he was recognized by Oil and Gas Investor magazine as its 2007 Executive of the Year.
His gift to March of the Living will support the organization’s scholarship funds and education, along with enabling students who cannot afford the trip to take part. Nefesh B’Nefesh will use his gift to help olim, Jews from the diaspora who have chosen to live in Israel, settle and make new lives for themselves. |
