A is for aliyah
09:18 AM CST on Saturday, January 5, 2008
Aliyah is the Hebrew word for ascend and is the act of emigrating from another country to Israel. In 1950, the Israeli parliament passed a law giving every Jew the right to Israeli entry and citizenship. (Criminals and people believed likely to endanger others are excluded.) Jews who "make aliyah" are called olim. Two non-Israeli groups recently earned the right from the government to be official aliyah organizations – Nefesh B'Nefesh in the United States and AMI, based in France.
The word aliyah also refers to being called to the altar to read from the Torah.
