Israel’s Electricity Reform: What It Means for You

For the first time since Israel’s founding, the electricity sector is breaking free from monopoly. Starting July 2024, every household in Israel can choose their electricity provider—just like with your internet or cellphone. The result? Hopefully, lower monthly bills and real savings for your family.

Why This Is Big?

This reform, led by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, means competition is finally here. You now have the freedom to choose a licensed electricity supplier—potentially cutting your bill by 5% to 20%, saving up to ₪600–₪1,500 per year.
Whether you’re a homeowner or renter, with or without a smart meter, you can make the switch.

How It Works?

  • Same Electricity, New Bill: The infrastructure remains IEC’s (Israel Electric Corporation), but billing and service go through your chosen supplier.
  • Monthly Billing: Unlike the IEC’s bimonthly billing, new suppliers charge monthly—easier for budgeting.
  • No Commitment: You can switch providers at any time, penalty-free.

Who Are the Suppliers?

Currently, four companies offer services to residential users:

  1. Pazgas (פזגז)
Offers four plans, detailed power reports, and top-rated customer service. Great for those with Smart Meters.
    Website: pazgas.co.il | Phone: *9636
  2. Amisragas Electricity (אמישראגז חשמל)
Fixed discount 24/7—no hourly tracking needed. Gas + electricity bundle deals available.
    Website: amisragas.co.il | Phone: *3179
  3. Electra Power (formerly Supergas)
Offers plans tailored to weekends/holidays and large institutions. Requires a Smart Meter.
    Website: electrapower.co.il | Phone: *3114
  4. Cellcom (סלקום)
Partners with Meshek Energy. Three packages with increasing discounts, the longer you stay.
    Website: cellcom.co.il | Phone: 1-800-052-052
  5. Bezeq (בזק)
Offers several plans, depending on days and hours of usage.
    Website: bezeq.co.il | Phone: 1-800-202-004

What’s a Smart Meter?

A Smart Meter records energy usage every 15 minutes (vs. every 2 months with older meters). This data helps you choose the most cost-effective plan.
By the end of 2028, Smart Meters are supposed to have been installed in every home in Israel.

How to Switch Providers?

  1. Compare Rates: Use trusted comparison sites like:
    Electric.pelleg.org
    Chashmalink.com
  2. Choose a Plan Based on Usage: Work from home? Go for a daytime plan. Mostly home at night? Pick a night-heavy plan. Prefer not to track hours? Opt for a fixed discount.
  3. Register Online or Call the Supplier: You’ll need your electric bill, ID number, and a credit card.
  4. Wait for Transfer: Takes up to 2 months (or up to 5 months total for full activation). Your bills will then come from your new provider.

What About Outages or Solar Panels?

  • Outages? Still managed by the IEC—they own the infrastructure.
  • Solar Panels? You’ll get separate invoices: one for usage, one for the energy you produce.

Final Tips

  • Switching is supposed to be FREE and reversible.
  • Track your consumption via Smart Meter reports for optimal plan selection.
  • Keep a record of your last IEC reading, just in case of billing discrepancies.
