This is a hands-on, individual contributor role with <strong>no administrative or people management duties<\/strong>, working as a direct extension of the Software Engineering Lead. This role is expected to spend a significant portion of time actively writing, reviewing, and maintaining production code and infrastructure, not just defining architecture. You will define and evolve the system architecture, cloud infrastructure, and operational tooling that support Surgimate\u2019s product suite and personally implement core components of these systems in production.<\/p>\n<p>The ideal candidate has deep technical expertise across cloud platforms, distributed systems, and CI\/CD, paired with exceptional behavioral maturity, open-mindedness, and strong architectural judgment. You will have GitHub maintainer responsibilities, production access, and the ability to participate in release management within 6\u20138 months. This role requires someone who thrives in complexity, communicates clearly, and balances technical rigor with practical decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>The Chief Architect is expected to take ownership of initiatives from initial concept through implementation, deployment, documentation, and handoff to the team. This role is <strong>not suitable for candidates seeking a primarily advisory, review-only, or high-level architecture position<\/strong> without hands-on ownership of delivery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you&#8217;ll do<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Architecture &amp; System Design<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Architect, implement, and maintain Surgimate\u2019s cloud-native platform, ensuring reliability, scalability, and operational excellence.<\/li>\n<li>Define, evolve, and personally implement system boundaries, service interactions, communication patterns, and integration architectures (microservices, event-driven, API-based).<\/li>\n<li>Design for resilience using proven architectural patterns (e.g., DDD concepts, messaging patterns, caching, HA\/failover strategies).<\/li>\n<li>Produce high-quality architecture diagrams and system documentation that accurately reflect implemented, running systems, not just conceptual designs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Cloud &amp; Infrastructure<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Works with Cloud Infrastructure team to design AWS architecture across services including ECS, Lambda, API Gateway, VPC, RDS, S3, IAM, and related components.<\/li>\n<li>Works with Cloud Infrastructure team to implement and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code (e.g.,Terraform, CloudFormation) and ensure repeatable, auditable environments.<\/li>\n<li>Drive cost optimization, security hardening, networking design, and environment reliability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>CI\/CD, DevOps &amp; Operational Excellence<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Design, implement, maintain, and optimize CI\/CD pipelines for automated testing, security scanning, deployments, and rollbacks.<\/li>\n<li>Implement and maintain observability strategies across logging, metrics, and tracing using APM tooling (e.g., Datadog, New Relic, OpenTelemetry, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to production readiness reviews, release planning, and deployment processes with full access and trust.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Data, Messaging &amp; Integrations<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Design and build scalable data models and storage strategies, including partitioning, replication, and caching.<\/li>\n<li>Architect and implement message-based communication using brokers such as SQS, RabbitMQ, or Kafka.<\/li>\n<li>Build and maintain API services, integration patterns, and reliable event-driven workflows in production.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>AI &amp; Modern Engineering Architecture<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Support AI integration efforts including model hosting patterns, inference architecture, and vector-based search through hands-on prototyping and implementation.<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to the evaluation and adoption of AI-driven tools and modern development workflows.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Collaboration, Leadership &amp; Governance (IC Role)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Act as a GitHub maintainer: review code, enforce architectural standards, and ensure consistency across repositories.<\/li>\n<li>Provide technical guidance and architectural insight without formal management responsibility.<\/li>\n<li>Drive consensus through clear communication, structured decision-making, and logical tradeoff analysis.<\/li>\n<li>Influence engineering culture by modeling professionalism, openness, and a calm, systems-thinking approach under pressure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Hands-On Development<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Contribute code, prototypes, and infrastructure tooling, primarily in <strong>Python and Java<\/strong>, with hands-on involvement in services and pipelines.<\/li>\n<li>Investigate and resolve complex production issues across distributed systems and cloud environments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Required Qualifications<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Education:<\/strong> Bachelor\u2019s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field OR equivalent deep practical experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Experience &amp; Skills:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>~5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant architectural responsibilities.<\/li>\n<li>Expert-level understanding of <strong>AWS<\/strong> (ECS, Lambda, networking, IAM, API Gateway, scaling strategies).<\/li>\n<li>Strong experience with <strong>CI\/CD pipelines<\/strong>, containerization, infrastructure-as-code, and automated deployments.<\/li>\n<li>Proficiency in <strong>Python<\/strong> for systems, services, and tooling development.<\/li>\n<li>Deep knowledge of <strong>microservice architecture<\/strong>, distributed systems, and message brokers (e.g., SQS, Kafka, RabbitMQ).<\/li>\n<li>Experience designing for scalability, reliability, resilience, and cost efficiency.<\/li>\n<li>Hands-on experience with <strong>APM tooling<\/strong> (e.g., New Relic, Datadog, OpenTelemetry, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>Strong understanding of API design, integration patterns, and operational best practices.<\/li>\n<li>Proven ability to create effective diagrams, architecture maps, and system documentation.<\/li>\n<li>Comfortable with GitHub maintainership, code review, repository ownership, and release processes.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work independently with high trust, full-production-access responsibilities, and strong ethics.<\/li>\n<li>Excellent communication skills and a behavioral orientation toward collaboration, clarity, maturity, and open-mindedness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Working Conditions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hybrid;
