âBooks Are Uniquely Portable Magic.”
Crossing Borders, Finding Selves
As Olim/Olot, we’ve re-written our stories, opened up our lives to new adventures & experienced the challenges and triumphs along this strange journey of immigration.
So, let’s read books exploring similar themes and discuss them! What can we learn from others who have made this journey — whether real or imagined — and what can we learn from each other?

Stories from the Tenants Downstairs, by Sidik Fofana â
You can find it at the Book Depository here.
The Kindle edition is here.
Synopsis: In eight interconnected stories, Sidik Fofana conjures a residential community under pressure. There is Swan, in apartment 6B, whose excitement about his friendâs release from prison jeopardizes the life heâs been trying to lead. Mimi, in apartment 14D, hustles to raise the child she had with Swan, waitressing at Roscoeâs and doing hair on the side. And Quanneisha B. Miles, in apartment 21J, is a former gymnast with a good education who wishes she could leave Banneker for good, but canât seem to escape the buildingâs gravitational pull. We root for the tight-knit cast of characters as they weave in and out of one anotherâs narratives, working to escape their pasts and blaze new paths forward for themselves and the people they love. All the while we brace, as they do, for the challenges of a rapidly shifting future.
Let’s discuss!
