According to Israeli law, every child born to an Israeli citizen residing abroad must be registered at the Israeli Consulate in their region, within 30 days after the birth.

Please note: A minor inherits Israeli citizenship from his/her parent(s) regardless of the child’s place of birth. Therefore, even if the minor was born in the U.S. and is an American citizen the child is also considered an Israeli citizen. They will hold dual citizenship and MUST be registered as an Israeli citizen.

In order to register your child (and issue an Israeli ID number), one of the parents must come to the Israeli Consulate in person with the child.  You must bring the child’s original birth certificate (this service cannot be done by mail) with an apostille. For more information regarding apostilles, please click here.

You must also bring both parents’ valid passports, even if one of the parents is not an Israeli citizen.

Please note: If the parents are not registered as married with Misrad Hapnim (the Ministry of Interior) in Israel, they will need to present their original marriage certificate with apostille certification at the Consulate.

If the parents are divorced, the custodial parent must register the child and will have to present documentation proving they hold custody of the minor.

If, at the time of registration, you would also like to apply for a passport, please bring:

  • Two identical passport photos of the child
  • $38 payable by cash, credit card or money order in the name of the “Consulate General of Israel in…”. Personal checks are not accepted
  • There is an additional $9 fee if you want the passport delivered by FedEx
  • Both parents’ passports

Please note: Your child must be physically present at the Israeli Consulate in order for their passport application to be processed.

The standard processing time for an Israeli passport application is two weeks.
