There are a number of programs through which a new Oleh or volunteer can serve in the Israeli army (IDF).
Army Service programs
Mahal 2000 (18 months in the IDF)-www.mahal2000.com - The Mahal 2000 programs enable young Jews from all over the world to volunteer for the IDF (Israel Defense Forces). The programs aim to contribute to Israel's defense and to provide knowledgeable and enthusiastic young leaders for Jewish communities. Please note that Mahal is a program geared toward non-Israelis. Israel citizens and children of Israeli citizens are ineligible for the program.
Mahal Hesder- www.wzo.org.il - Machal Hesder is an Army program intended for religious students who wish to serve in a special framework. The length of the program is 21 months, serving in regular Hesder units.
The program is divided into three tracks:
9 months of straight army service
12 months of study in Yeshiva under the Hesder program in a military framework
Returning abroad: Within 3 months of your release from the army, you must leave the country for a period of 2 years. During these 2 years, you may visit for periods of up to 3 months. If you do not keep to this schedule, you will be required to serve for another 12 months: 6 months of active army service and 6 months of yeshiva study ("Shalat Hesder").
Garin Tzabar- www.israelscouts.org - Tzofim Garin Tzabar is a group of young Jews, some the children of Israelis, with a strong connection to and interested in returning to Israel to serve in the army. The Garin returns to Israel as a group, lives together on a kibbutz and individually serves in the army. For those who want to join the IDF (Israel Defense Forces), but are afraid to do it alone, Tzofim Garin Tzabar offers a support network for Hebrew speaking American young adults making that important choice.
The process includes 5 seminars throughout the year in which the participants deal with their own personal dilemmas and the decision of joining the army. They learn about their duties in the army and their rights as citizens of Israel and create important support relationships with peers who will share this experience. The seminars are in Hebrew to give the members of the Garin a chance to practice. Therefore, basic knowledge of Hebrew is necessary.
Atuda- www.hagshama.org.il - Atuda is an army program for new Olim who wish to complete their university studies prior to doing their army service. After registering for the army (which includes bringing a letter of acceptance by the institution in which you are studying), you continue with your studies. During your vacations, you will do basic training and some type of reserve duty. Only upon completion of your studies will you do your regular service.
Your basic training (normally one month, during the summer holidays) counts towards your obligatory (Chova) service and you receive the full rights, obligations and pay of a regular soldier in his obligatory service.
Any reserve duty (Miluim) does not count towards your service time.
