Rabbi Lau to Address Shabbat Honoring Olim in Jerusalem
08:36 Aug 30, '05 / 25 Av 5765

(IsraelNN.com) The Jerusalem Great Synagogue will hold special Shabbat services this Saturday, 3 September 2005 to welcome the 1,800 new olim (immigrants) from North America who have arrived this summer through Nefesh B’Nefesh. Tel Aviv Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, a former Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi of Israel, will welcome Israel’s latest arrivals in a special address to the synagogue.

Almost 3,200 North American Jews will move to Israel this year, including the more than 1,800 who have arrived in July-August on six specially chartered flights through Nefesh B’Nefesh, acting in close coordination with the Jewish Agency for Israel.

As well as special prayers led by Chief Cantor Naftali Herstik and the sermon by Rabbi Lau, the Jerusalem Great Synagogue will also host a lavish kiddush for the olim, following services. The Jerusalem Great Synagogue Choir, conducted by Elli Jaffe, will accompany Cantor Herstik.

Rabbi Lau, who holds a long association with the Jerusalem Great Synagogue, was the guest of honor on one of Nefesh B’Nefesh’s summer flights. On August 2nd, Rabbi Lau joined some 250 North Americans who flew out of JFK Airport in New York on one-way tickets to Israel.

“The Jerusalem Great Synagogue, the leading Jewish place of worship in Israel, is proud to welcome the new Olim at this special Shabbat in their honor,” stated synagogue Chairman Asher Schapiro.

“The new Olim symbolize the best hope for a bright and successful future for the State of Israel and for the People of Israel. There is no more appropriate place to host this event than in the most beautiful synagogue, sitting in the holiest city of the most important place in the world for the Jewish People - the Land of Israel. At this Shabbat we congratulate all of the immigrants and bid them a hearty ‘welcome home!’ ”
