(IsraelNN.com) More than 220 new
immigrants (olim) from the United States arrived this
morning in Israel. They are just one group out of a total of
1,800 North American Jews moving to Israel this summer under
the auspices of Nefesh B'Nefesh, an organization founded to
help North American Jews make Aliyah (immigrate to
Israel).
Also on the flight today, accompanying the
olim was Malcolm Hoenlein, director of the Conference
of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, and
Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv, . Rabbi Lau
was flown to New York especially to accompany the American
olim.
In a short ceremony at the New York
airport, Rabbi Lau gave the group of immigrants his blessing
and said that Aliyah is a national treasure at any
time; however, at this time period, in which we commemorate
the destruction of the two Temples in Jerusalem and ahead of
the implementation of the Disengagement Plan, the group's
immigration is a morale booster and a shot of encouragement
for Israeli society.
