Mitzpe photoMitzpe Ramon was founded in 1951 as a camp for the workers building the road to Eilat. The town’s first permanent residents, immigrants from North Africa and Romania, settled there in the 1960s, and it became the southernmost of the Negev’s development towns. The town has a population of approximately 5,000 residents, a mixture of the original residents of North African or Romanian descent, soldiers associated with the nearby army base, Yeshiva students and their families who attend the local hesder Yeshiva, and a growing population of artists from the center of the country looking for lower living prices and open vistas. Mitzpe Ramon is located in a stunningly beautiful area, above the Makhtesh Ramon Canyon.

Local Employment
Residents of the town are employed mostly by local services, work in hotels and tourism related services, or commute to Beersheva, Sde Boker or Yerucham. The town is ideal for those who are seeking quiet, beautiful surroundings and want to be part
of building the Negev. The government has recently converted military land to an agrotourism project and individual
families who have proven residency may apply to receive agricultural land. The initial projects are inspiring examples of what may be done to create opportunity and green the Negev.

Education / Youth
Mitzpe Ramon boasts three elementary schools, two high schools and a Hesder Yeshiva and Midrasha – all known for the quality of their programs which attract students from all over the country. There is a secular grade school and high school which emphasizes academic studies and the arts. The dati leumi torani grade school emphasizes Torah and academic studies as well as ecological studies.

Transportation
There are frequent buses to Be’er Sheva throughout the day and it takes approximately one hour to get to Be’er Sheva by car or bus.

Amenities / Services
Mitzpe Ramon has a local center that offers after-school courses in drama, sports, arts, singing, etc as well as a municipal pool and a sports center. The local dance company Adamah also has a full program of dance courses both for professional dancers and local residents. The Jazz club is a venue for musical talent from all over the country. The town is located at a height of 900 meters, with a high desert climate. Temperatures are pleasant and there is almost always a breeze. The winter nights can be cold and it has been
known to snow here. Health services are provided by either Maccabi or Clalit health services. The local pharmacy and the emergency services are on call all night.

Community and Religious Life
There are eight local synagogues including Conservative, Sephardi, Ashkenazi, Chabad, and Breslov in addition to the Hesder Yeshiva.
There is a small but growing Anglo-community in Mitzpe Ramon, ready to welcome any newcomers.
