Employment
Finding employment in Israel is often one of the biggest concerns for prospective Olim. Nefesh B'Nefesh has developed a full service Employment Department which assists Olim throughout the entire process of searching for jobs. By offering guidance, counseling sessions and job placements for Olim while providing recruitment services at no cost to potential employers, we have been successful in helping new Olim find jobs in a wide range of fields. As part of the Go North program, an NBN employment professional will be dedicated to helping Olim find suitable employment opportunities in the area. The North offers a wide variety of employment opportunities in a number of fields, including hi- tech, education, accounting, manufacturing, the medical professions and the defense industry. The North is also ripe for entrepreneurship, and there are resources available to assist those who are interested in opening a business there.

Teaching English is a practical option for Olim whose Hebrew skills do not enable them to teach in Hebrew. There is a shortage of English teachers overall in Israel’s public school system, particularly in areas of the country such as the North which don’t have a high concentration of Anglo Saxon Olim. In order to address the need for teachers as well as to open additional professional opportunities for Olim, Nefesh B’Nefesh is currently assisting the Ministry of Education in building an expedited teachers’ training program which will integrate Olim into the system. The program will be fully subsidized by the Ministry of Education and will include an Ulpan, frontal instruction as well as student teaching, and will guarantee placement in an Israeli school upon completion of the course.
In addition, there are educational centers such as Berlitz and the Wall Street Institute which offer opportunities for teaching English to adults. Previous teaching experience is not necessary and training is done by the centers. Many of these jobs are part time, providing a practical option for those who are in Ulpan or have childcare responsibilities at home.
Tutoring in English is also a viable option for Olim, as English is a required course from elementary school through high school. There is a need in particular for tutors for the English Bagrut which high school students are required to pass in order to receive their Matriculation Certificate.
Haifa is home to two major Israeli universities: the Technion and Haifa University. In addition, there are several smaller colleges located in the North. These institutions hire English speakers to work in international relations departments, research and in some academic positions.
