Licensing for Medical Professionals

The following information applies to: speech therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, dieticians, chiropractors, podiatrists, dental hygenists, clinical criminologists, medical technicians and x-ray technicians.

Following a recent ruling of the Israeli Supreme Court, the Ministry of Health is  not allowed to process the licensing of the professions listed above. This situation will continue until the relevant medical licensing laws are amended by the Knesset. In the meantime:

1. Prepare your file now - carefully - in order to be ready to apply for licensing as soon as the Ministry of Health begins to process applications for these categories of medical professionals. 2. In the current situation, medical institutions are allowed to employ unlicensed individuals belonging to the medical professions listed above. 

However, in most cases, public institutions such as public hospitals and sick funds, are reluctant to employ unlicensed professionals. This is because in most cases, these individuals will not be able to get malpractice insurance coverage; and public institutions in Israel  generally share "overall responsibility" with their employees.

In contrast, private institutions are less concerned with this matter. Private institutions contract with a private professional who provides them with services and is fully responsible for his/her acts, without engaging the responsibility of the institution.
