Important Announcement for Physician Assistants

Over the past 2.5 years, this effort has gained significant momentum, and NBN has actively collaborated with Misrad HaBriut to formalize the PA profession in Israel.

After months of intensive involvement, including behind-the-scenes discussions and active advocacy within the Knesset Health Committee, a pivotal moment arrived on July 20th when the legislation was voted on and unanimously approved by the Knesset Health Committee. Subsequently, on July 30th, 2023, the Knesset also voted unanimously to approve the legislation.

This decision is a game-changer for Olim, who can now make Aliyah and work in their trained profession, and it promises to provide a substantial boost to the Israeli healthcare system as a whole.

The legislation stipulates that it will take effect within a year, opening doors for hundreds of Olim to find employment in Israel by the summer of 2024.

While there is still work ahead, we are confident that, in partnership with Misrad HaBriut, we will achieve the goals we have set for ourselves.

Over the course of the next year, NBN will continue to work closely with the Ministry of Health as they prepare for the full implementation of the PA profession in the Israeli healthcare system.

As of October 2016, it is possible for a foreign-trained Physician Assistant (PA) to become a PA in Israel.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) is launching a course to train medical professionals to become PAs within the Israeli medical system.

Israeli PAs will work under the supervision and guidance of physicians and will engage in all aspects of medicine: obtaining medical histories, undertaking physical examinations, diagnosis and treatment of illnesses and injuries, ordering and processing of laboratory tests, performing medical procedures, assisting during procedures and advancing health education.

The need for PAs in Israel has been discussed for decades. In 2012, a professional committee was assembled to examine the ways in which PAs may be incorporated as an integral piece of the Israeli medical establishment. In accordance with the committee’s recommendations, it was decided to launch the program by training PAs in three medical fields: emergency medicine, anesthesiology and pathology. The positions will be filled by acting health professionals, by expanding their responsibilities according to section 59 of the Physicians Ordinance and the Physicians Regulations (Qualifications for Performing Exceptional Activities), 2001.

An Emergency Medicine PA training course has already begun. The second course is due to open at the end of February 2017, and its enrollment will begin shortly. The courses in anesthesiology and pathology are still under development.

In order to be licensed as an Israeli PA all applicants are required to complete an MOH-approved training program. The following professionals are eligible to apply to the Israeli PA course in Emergency Medicine:

  • Israeli-trained paramedics
  • Certified PAs from other countries
  • MDs, whose degrees have been approved to take the licensing exam by the Israeli Ministry of Health

The training course in Emergency Medicine PA will be take place at the MOH’s training center at Sheba Hospital in Ramat Gan and it will last approximately 9 months. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a PA diploma from the Israeli Ministry of Health. Currently, the course is fully funded by the MOH. Participants will also receive a monthly allowance during the course.

In order to join the course, candidates must be hired by a hospital that offers PAs positions.  Major parts of the course will involve training at the sponsoring hospital, and upon completion of the course the PA will continue to practice in the training hospital.

For registration and more information please contact the course director, Mr. Udi Gelbshtein from the MOH, at [email protected]
