Backstage of History

Nefesh B’Nefesh Olim enjoyed an inspirational evening with Toldot Yisrael, an organization dedicated to recording and sharing the first hand testimonies of the men and women who helped found the State of Israel. The film, “Backstage of History – Stories from the Founding of the State of Israel”, was narrated by Toldot Yisrael founder Aryeh Halivni who showed the audience a series of interviews with amazing footage from the everyday heroes who lived during the creation of the State. After the film, our special guest, 96 year old Smokey Simon from South Africa, spoke about his experiences in the air force during the War of Independence. Smokey shared fascinating and detailed recollections from his years as a Machal volunteer and about the people with whom he served, which brought the audience to their feet for a two minute standing ovation at the end of his talk. Among the audience, we were honored to host eight lone soldiers who were particularly moved by the presentation. One participant, 80 year old Louis Liss, who made Aliyah two weeks ago, remarked, “watching the films and listening to the speaker reinforce why we are here and gives tribute to those who made our lives here possible.” Other Olim thanked us for an evening of “pure inspiration”. The theater in the Beit Hatfutsot בית התפוצות Diaspora Musem in Tel Aviv University was a fitting setting for Olim who continue to embrace their past while shaping their identities as new Israeli citizens. #LiveLoveIsrael #MakeItHome To find out about upcoming events, check out our calendar: https://events.nbn.org.il/SearchEvents.aspx?country=Israel
